With China’s urbanization process and changes in rural family structures, the abandonment of farmland scattered villages within hilly mountainous regions is becoming an increasingly serious issue, restricting improvement land use efficiency. This study analyzes basic characteristics variations abandoned by conducting surveys interviews with peasants a village southern China. Using Heckman two-stage model, we perform empirical analysis on factors influencing abandonment, addressing potential sample selection bias. The findings show following: better health higher education levels are more likely to transition non-agricultural occupations which contributes increased farmland. However, larger integrated parcels, along favorable farming conditions, help reduce abandonment. Additionally, transfer agricultural subsidies important that enhance utilization mitigate These results provide reference for improving both environment social policies villages.
