The interaction between antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in freshwater ecosystems has become a critical environmental concern. This study investigates seasonal variations of sulfonamide tetracycline their relationship with ARGs three urban reservoirs Nanjing, China: Pingshan Forest Park, Shanhu Lake Wetland Zhaoqiao Reservoir. Sampling was conducted May September 2023 to assess water quality, concentrations, ARG abundance. A total 30 samples were analyzed regard physicochemical parameters, heavy metals, antibiotics. quantitative PCR assay used measure the abundance relative 16S rRNA gene. Sulfonamide concentrations ranged from 120 ng/L, while tetracyclines 50–160 ng/L. Notably, sulfamethazine decreased significantly two (Shanhu Zhaoqiao, p < 0.05), other showed minimal variation, indicating persistent contamination agricultural runoff wastewater discharge. lower than September, being cumulatively genes. Strong correlations (r > 0.7) observed parameters like dissolved oxygen pH. High levels areas without nearby hospitals or pharmaceutical companies, implicating agriculture as major pollution source. By analyzing across eutrophic China, we highlight drivers proliferation propose targeted mitigation strategies.

The thermal pollution caused by the usage of fossil energy sources has a significant impact on aquatic ecosystems that requires effective cooling systems for reduction temperatures such as Cooling Water Way (CWW). This study examines correlation between CWW length and temperature at Jeneponto power plant (2×150 MW) in Indonesia, focusing two sections: box culvert (0-359 m) open channel (359 m-1068 m). segment, with minimal air-water interaction, achieves gradient 0.0006 °C/m, while segment shows higher 0.0022 °C/m due to enhanced convection, evaporation, radiation. Linear regression models both segments (R² is 0.9586 0.9961, respectively) highlight important role configuration efficiency. These findings provide valuable insights optimizing designs control coal-fired plants worldwide.

The rhizosphere, a biologically active zone where plant roots interface with soil, plays crucial role in enhancing health, resilience, and stress tolerance. As key component achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2, the rhizosphere is increasingly recognized for its potential to promote sustainable agricultural productivity. Engineering microbiome emerging as an innovative strategy foster growth, improve adaptation, restore soil health while mitigating detrimental effects of conventional farming practices. This review synthesizes recent advancements omics technologies, sequencing tools, synthetic microbial communities (SynComs), which have provided insights into complex interactions between plants microbes. We examine root exudates, composed organic acids, amino sugars, secondary metabolites, biochemical cues that shape beneficial rhizosphere. further explores how advanced techniques like metagenomics metabolomics are employed elucidate mechanisms by exudates influence health. Tailored SynComs shown promising resilience against both abiotic stresses (e.g., drought salinity) biotic challenges pathogens pests). Nitrogen pollution in urban rivers, exacerbated by rapid urbanization, poses a growing threat to water quality. Microbial communities are essential mediating nitrogen cycling and mitigating these ecosystems. This study integrated three-year (2021–2023) quality monitoring with metagenomic sequencing investigate microbial community dynamics, processes, their responses the Shi River, Qinhuangdao, China. was predominantly derived from industrial discharges enterprises River Reservoir upstream (e.g., coolant chemical effluents), agricultural runoff, untreated domestic sewage (particularly catering waste Pantao Valley), livestock farming effluents. Total (TN) concentrations ranged 2.22 6.44 mg/L, exceeding China’s Class V standard (2.0 GB 3838-2002), highest level at urbanized W4 site (6.44 mg/L). Nitrate (NO3-N) accounted for 60–80% of TN. Metagenomic analysis revealed Fragilaria, Microcystis, Flavobacterium thriving (up 15% relative abundance) under stress, metabolism genes (narG, nifH, nirK) enriched polluted sites (W2, W4), narG reaching 26% W1. Dissolved oxygen positively correlated nitrate reductase gene abundance, while ammonia inhibited it. Burkholderiales Limnohabitans dominated denitrification, offering insights into sustainable river management.
