Abstract Cellulose is a strong contender to become raw material which can enable the development of new sustainably resourced biodegradable materials composites supporting circular economy. Almost limitless possibilities exist for functionalising cellulose molecule via highly reactive hydroxyl groups enabling easy modification surface, leading generation tailored compatibility with wide variety industrial applications. nanofibrils (CNF) are one most promising such lignocellulose derivatives. Currently, their production capacity and economy hindered by high chemical energy consumption, latter primarily during mechanical fibrillation native fibre in aqueous suspension, negative limitation very low solids content associated gel-like properties resulting final product. Eliminating need liquid water process treatment could, therefore, be transformative respect feasibility, end-product transportation application. The work reported here illustrates application oxygen gas barrier discharge plasma on dry fibre. example comes from paper pulp manufacture, but principle not limited wood source. action etch microcellulose structure, simultaneously oxidising glue-functioning hemicellulose, rendering it potentially soluble, so that nanopolymer crystalline-based fibrils subsequently readily delaminated initial microfiber, either under mild shearing forces or at point using ultrasonication medium, form commonly used nanocellulose gel-suspension, newly desired higher content. absence this pretreatment CNF deliver significant reduction cost environmental load. In addition, transport treated product its transformation gel decrease fuel consumption drastically bring yet further benefits.
