Abstract Hydrogen will become a key player in transitioning toward net-zero energy system. However, clear pathway unified European hydrogen infrastructure to support the rapid scale-up of production is still under discussion. This study explores plausible pathways using fully sector-coupled system model. Here, we assess emergence build-outs connecting neighboring nations through import and domestic centers with Western Central demands via four distinct corridors. We identify potential lock-in effect blue medium term, highlighting risk long-term dependence on methane. In contrast, show that self-sufficient Europe relying green by 2050 would increase yearly expenses around 3% require 518 gigawatts electrolysis capacity. emphasizes importance rapidly scaling up capacity, building networks storage facilities, deploying renewable electricity generation, ensuring coherent coordination across nations.

Hydrogen is widely considered as the energy carrier of future, but rather high losses for its production are often neglected. The major current hydrogen technology steam methane reforming fossil gas, there a growing interest in producing sustainably from water using electrolysis. This article examines four main chains and two transportation options (pipeline ship) North Africa to Europe, analyzing costs environmental impacts each. core objective determine most promising provision method location an economic ecological point view, including required transport. An important finding this analysis that both options, importing green it may be relevant decarbonized system. emphasis should on achieve carbon emission reductions. If blue also considered, attention paid often-neglected emissions upstream.
