Green hydrogen and ammonia are forecast to play key roles in the deep decarbonization of global economy. Here we explore potential using green couple energy, agriculture, industrial sectors with India’s national-scale electricity grid. India is an ideal test case as it currently has one most ambitious programs world, projected demands for production accounting over 1500 TWh/yr or nearly 25% total demand by 2050. We model grid half its steel fertilizer industries uncover modest risks from such a strategy, many benefits opportunities. Our analysis suggests that renewables-based energy system coupled off-take dramatically reduce greenhouse emissions, requirements expensive long-duration storage firm generating capacity, curtailment renewable provide valuable short-duration load-shifting resilience inter-annual weather variations, replace tens billions USD fuel imports each year. All this while potentially powering new multi-billion maritime export industries. The risk relation strategy lies higher costs reduced if rest world does not match their investment renewables, electrolyzers, clean technologies. show pessimistic outcome could result staying high through 2050, although still within range gray counterparts. If on other hand, continue decline further continued deployment, all above be achieved levelized cost (10–25%), reduction (5%). Such would have profound implications given central role future economy, establishing leadership shipping fuel, steel, creating affordable, sustainable, secure domestic supply.
