In this work, we propose elastic metamaterials with phase discontinuities to steer the propagation of near-source bulk waves in a semi-infinite medium. Our design exploits an array embedded subwavelength resonators tailored masses attain complete shift spanning 0 2 π . This control allows for diverse wave functionalities, such as directional refraction and energy focusing. Through use dispersion diagrams generalized Snell’s law, along multiple scattering formulation, analytically demonstrate effectiveness our achieving desired wavefront manipulation. The proposed has potential advance field guiding using find practical applications areas isolating ground-borne vibrations densely urbanized regions harvesting. article is part theme issue ‘Current developments acoustic science (Part 1)’.

The concept of metamaterial recently emerged as a new frontier scientific research, encompassing physics, materials science and engineering. In broad sense, indicates an engineered material with exotic properties not found in nature, obtained by appropriate architecture either at macro-scale or micro-/nano-scales. metamaterials can be tailored to open unforeseen opportunities for mechanical acoustic applications, demonstrated impressive increasing number studies. Building on this knowledge, theme issue aims gather cutting-edge theoretical, computational experimental studies elastic metamaterials, the purpose offering wide perspective recent achievements future challenges.
