ABSTRACT Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses were at the forefront of patient during coronavirus (COVID‐19) pandemic. To date, no studies have explored what it meant to be a ‘good nurse’ in this unique and challenging context. As such, aim study was construct meaning ICUs Semi‐structured interviews conducted with 25 ICU from three Kuwait, who had worked COVID‐19 The data analysed using Charmaz's grounded theory methodology. analysis showed that good nurse defined by their sense duty, which motivated compassionate dedicated care. However, nurses' attempts demonstrate virtue also negative consequences for them. Selflessness led unsustainable self‐sacrifice, empathy emotional labour, efforts remain respectful exhaustion as found themselves under increasing pressure. Attempts mentally strong may partially protected them stress, but deprived an outlet authentic expression support. Ultimately, preserve quality despite numerous challenges pandemic came cost, resulted moral distress impaired well‐being.
