In decision making, intolerance of uncertainty (IU) may be linked to safety behavior, which could ironically maintain IU and, thus, foster indecisiveness. a smartphone-based experience sampling study, 247 participants described their real-life decisions six times per day and rated (a) situational indecisiveness, (b) characteristics, (c) IU, (d) problematic behaviors. Participants higher in dispositional reported more indecisiveness engaged behavior across measurements. The same relationships were observed with at the level individual Engaging behaviors during first days predicted on last day, mediated by IU. results demonstrate relevance relationship between behavior.

Evidence for non-linear extinction learning and no influence of intolerance of uncertainty: investigating US expectancies in a VR fear conditioning paradigm DOI Open Access

In exposure therapy, the degree to which individuals effectively correct their threat expectancies varies considerably. Using appropriate statistical models capture this variability and investigating potential moderators (i.e. mechanisms of change) extinction learning process is therefore important. We hypothesized that a non-linear model would better explain trajectories indexed by unconditioned stimulus (US) than linear intolerance uncertainty (IU) might negatively impact extinction. Seventy-one spider-fearful participants completed two-day realistic virtual reality conditioning paradigm where spider served as US. Trial-by-trial US expectancy ratings were collected main outcome during acquisition used ordered beta regression in Bayesian estimation framework analyze data. As expected, trial-by-trial substantially explained model. Non-linear can more adequately interindividual differences providing fit such However, IU did not moderate our study. Previous research influences on produced mixed results, study supports notion are largely insensitive IU.

Exposure-based therapy for anxiety disorders involves confrontations with feared but innocuous stimuli to promote inhibitory safety learning and fear extinction. Little is known about factors that may impede generalization of extinction memory from used during exposure similar later encountered. Trait a vulnerability factor developing anxiety-related associated deficient learning. In this preregistered study, we tested whether high-trait compared low-trait anxious individuals would show less Intolerance uncertainty worry were also measured as closely related dimensions dispositional negativity. Participants completed conditioning paradigm three phases: acquisition, extinction, generalization. Dependent measures online threat expectancy distress ratings. Fear acquisition successful in both groups, there no group differences These results suggest high trait does not memory.

We conducted an experiment to assess the role of trait anxiety (TA) and prospective intolerance uncertainty (P-IU) in extinction renewal avoidance distress. In this experiment, we used procedure which making response did not prevent participants from noticing that US follow warning stimuli. Renewal was assessed through a re-extinction phase context different acquisition phases. Our dependent measures included participants’ scores on P-IU TA, frequency responses per trial, post-trial relief ratings (used infer degree distress suffered during previous trial). found higher were associated with heightened safety signal had never been followed by phase, overall less steep reduction phase. Increased TA safety-signal trials along slower results inconclusive regarding individual differences effect. general, our provide evidence for vulnerability factors pathological relief.

Previous studies showed that glucose has beneficial effects on memory function and can enhance contextual fear learning. To derive potential therapeutic interventions, further research is needed regarding the of extinction. In two experimental with healthy participants (Study 1: N = 68, 39 females; Study 2: 89, 67 females), we investigated extinction learning its consolidation. Participants completed a differential conditioning paradigm consisting acquisition, extinction, return tests: reinstatement, recall. US-expectancy ratings, skin conductance response (SCR), potentiated startle (FPS) were collected. pseudorandomized double-blinded to one groups: They received either drink containing or saccharine 20 min before 1) immediately after 2). The group significantly stronger decrease in FPS during recall Additionally, lower anxiety at test reinstatement Our findings provide first evidence supports process particular consolidation memory, thus as adjuvant extinction-based treatments.
