With the increasing use of biodegradable plastics in agriculture and food packaging, it has become increasingly important to assess effects their fragmentation mineralization environment (i.e., soil, compost). PBAT is a polyester widely used mulch films that are intended fragment mineralize soil. To study these effects, novel methodologies needed quantify microplastics diverse environments. This work seeks answer whether gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) can be as tool A method was developed allows soil extraction by ultrasonication GCMS quantification after fatty acid methyl ester derivatization. validate method, an industrial compost degradation experiment carried out evidence weight loss film micro- nano-plastic generated from them. The presented improved existing resolution by, at least, one order magnitude compared reported methods. In conclusion, novel, simple, affordable, reproducible methodology for microplastic detection improving limits quantification. tested on experiment, demonstrating ability trace totality plastic over time, evidencing consumed environment.

Scientific interest in the use of environmental microbiomes for risk assessment is rapidly growing, as exemplified by various EFSA opinions. In absence official regulatory guidelines on how to integrate assessment, aims this report are therefore determine whether microbiome studies can be used such purposes, and propose a roadmap integration assessments under EFSA's remit. The identifies current gaps (in terms knowledge from technical point view) barriers that might delay implementation methods, offers recommendations standardised (multi-)omics techniques purposes. Our main findings identified five priorities: (i) defining core (what it encompasses what made of, including identification bioindicators) assess impact any type disturbance; (ii) standardising methodologies protocols, sampling interpretation, guarantee comparability analyses; (iii) developing tools facilitate interpretation; (iv) collecting microbiome-based data shared, curated maintained databases; (v) setting up European Network Microbiome Laboratories reach an agreement standardise studies, interactions between researchers access or samples, actively include multiple stakeholders discussions involving assessment. There both short- longer-term priorities, all which highlight need mobilise concurrently different agencies institutions, well research. also points out capacity building training, acceptance emerging technology, communication issues. These will hopefully contribute elaboration widely accepted framework dealing with.

The understanding of microplastic degradation and its effects remains limited due to the absence accurate analytical techniques for detecting quantifying micro- nanoplastics. In this study, we investigated release nanoplastics small microplastics in water from low-density polyethylene (LDPE) greenhouse cover films under simulated sunlight exposure six months. Our analysis included both new naturally aged (used) films, enabling us evaluate impact natural aging. Additionally, photooxidation were assessed by comparing irradiated non-irradiated conditions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) nanoparticle tracking (NTA) confirmed presence particles below 1 μm films. NTA revealed a clear effect aging, with used releasing more than but no photooxidation, as released similar amounts at each time point. Raman spectroscopy demonstrated lower crystallinity PE compared Flow cytometry total organic carbon data provided evidence additional material besides PE, photodegradation observed only Finally, our results underscore importance studying aging processes plastic products using complementary assess environmental fate safety risks posed plastics agriculture.

The widespread use of synthetic polymers since the mid-twentieth century has led to significant environmental pollution from microplastics (MPs). These MPs, which persist in ecosystems, can interact with various pollutants, including pesticides such as tebuconazole (TEB). subject paper investigates sorption behaviour TEB on different types MPs (polystyrene, polypropylene, and polyamide-6), focusing kinetics isotherms these interactions. role metal cations (Al, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn) influencing is also investigated. Our findings highlight critical flaws that invalidate original article, mainly interpretation physicochemical properties, pKa speciation, importance considering ion complexation risk assessment. models used by authors, although widely used, are questioned for their accuracy representing real-world scenarios.
