Abstract Organizations craft their identities to define character and effectively communicate values stakeholders. In the contemporary quest for sustainability, building an identity that genuinely reflects awareness attention these issues is increasingly salient. Over years, research on organizational exhibited constant growth, witnessing power of exerted over behavior. Prior has emphasized importance array positive outcomes. Still, much less known about levers behind formation process. Against this backdrop, present study explores pathways a sustainable identity. By drawing sensemaking literature, we build up narrative inquiry, analyzing experiences perspectives executives from 25 Brazilian coffee producers through in‐depth interviews. The findings underline process involves three phases, namely, orienting toward acting sustainably, forging identity, which are also shaped by contextual factors. We emphasize key role leadership in as motivations sustainability‐oriented commitments could serve catalysts triggering change.

Industrial economic activity is one of the primary causes environmental degradation and a source issues related to social inequality. Nevertheless, research has shown that application sustainable entrepreneurship model can significantly improve conditions while maintaining continuous growth. Despite that, statistics show relatively low engagement in entrepreneurship, potentially due lack expertise among entrepreneurs. Due engagement, available sustainability performance metrics are not relevant measurement tool. Thus, purpose this study identify set criteria evaluate levels within manufacturing industry.
