Trait characteristics of midfrontal theta connectivity as a neurocognitive measure of cognitive control and its relation to general cognitive abilities

Understanding
the
neurocognitive
basis
of
cognitive
control
and
its
relationship
with
general
abilities
is
a
key
challenge
in
individual
differences
research.
This
study
investigates
midfrontal
theta
connectivity
as
marker
for
control.
Using
electroencephalography
(EEG),
we
examined
global
across
three
distinct
tasks
148
participants.
Our
findings
reveal
that
exhibits
trait-like
properties,
demonstrating
stability
measurement
sessions.
Furthermore,
replicated
previous
results,
finding
strong
correlation
(r
=
0.64)
between
abilities,
especially
during
higher-order
stages
information
processing.
We
disentangled
specific
processes
contributing
to
this
by
employing
task-cueing
paradigm
cue
target
intervals.
The
results
indicated
only
response-related
processes,
not
cue-evoked
task-set
reconfiguration,
correlated
abilities.
These
insights
significantly
advance
theoretical
models
intelligence,
highlighting
critical
role
aspects
