Swedish Young Adults’ Perspectives on Mental Health and their Suggestions for a Digital Application Promoting Mental Health Literacy, Occupational Balance and Peer-Support: Qualitative Study (Preprint)

BACKGROUND
Young
adults
experience
stressors
in
their
transition
to
adulthood
and
are
at
increased
risk
of
mental
health
challenges.
This
is
compounded
by
young
adults’
low
levels
literacy
limited
competencies
implementing
strategies
promoting
well-being
daily
lives.
In
Sweden,
there
a
lack
co-designed
evidence-based
interventions
targeting
these
issues.
OBJECTIVE
The
aims
this
study
were
conduct
needs-assessment
Swedish
needs,
obtaining
views
on
how
digital
application
could
potentially
support
during
emerging
adulthood.
METHODS
Semi-structured
interviews
conducted
with
16
analyzed
using
reflexive
thematic
analysis.
RESULTS
subsequent
analysis
revealed
three
main
themes:
(1)
“To
Feel
that
Life
Worth
Living”–
Adults’
Needs
for
Mental
Health
Well-being;
(2)
"A
place
one's
personal
work
toward
own
well-being"–
Views
Digital
Application;
and,
(3)
“Something
Designed
Me”–
Customization
the
Application.
CONCLUSIONS
According
participating
adults,
means
tending
meaningful
relationships
activities.

social

usage,

Digital
health
interventions
(DHIs)
hold
promise
for
improving
the
reach
of
mental
care
adolescents,
particularly
those
from
under-resourced
communities
who
may
face
significant
barriers
to
accessing
in-person
care.
Yet,
low
engagement
and
uptake
have
challenged
DHIs'
potency.
Human-centered
design
(HCD)
integrates
end-users
(i.e.,
future
users
DHI)
into
iterative
processes,
thereby
prioritizing
their
needs
preferences.
Clinical
scientists
are
increasingly
embracing
HCD,
but
often
lack
expertise
in
how
apply
these
methods
practice.
We
provide
a
template
creating
session
interview
guide
assessment,
which
is
first
phase
our
HCD
process
DHI
dysregulated
eating
adolescents.
To
create
guide,
we
conducted
"needs
assessment"
within
team
identify
important
topic
areas
that
required
feedback

("investigate").
