This study investigated the psychophysiological and metabolomic changes during horticultural activities involving inhalation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in individuals experiencing depressive mood based on presence or absence soil microbe Streptomyces rimosus, which emits VOCs. Thirty participants met specific depression anxiety criteria engaged using inoculated with S. rimosus (experimental group) medium (control group). Electroencephalogram (EEG) was used to analyze resulting response, blood samples were collected after each activity. Significant increases observed FZ channel central frontal lobe for relative theta, alpha, slow ratio sensorimotor rhythm mid beta alpha high beta, whereas significant decreases noted gamma spectral edge frequency 50% 90%. GC-TOF-MS analysis identified 44 altered serum metabolites, showing an increasing trend succinate, glycolate, glycerate, acetate, palmitate, myristate, laurate, caprynate, octanoate, are related citrate cycle, glyoxylate dicarboxylate metabolism, fatty acid biosynthesis. In conclusion, this suggests that VOCs can help alleviate moods.
