Cochlear implants are the most successful neural prostheses used to restore hearing in severe-to-profound hearing-impaired individuals. The field of cochlear implant coding investigates interdisciplinary approaches translate acoustic signals into electrical pulses transmitted at electrode-neuron interface, ranging from signal preprocessing algorithms, enhancement, and feature extraction methodologies electric generation. In last five decades, numerous strategies have been proposed clinically experimentally. Initially developed speech perception, increasing computational possibilities now allow more complex signals, new techniques optimize transmission constantly gaining attention. This review provides insights history multichannel presents an extensive list implemented strategies. article briefly addresses each method considers promising future directions possible processing, with ultimate goal providing a current big picture large coding.
