This study focuses on a rare sail-shaped macrofossil, Alienum velamenus gen. & sp. nov. from the Jiangchuan Biota in Yunnan Province, China. The new species presented here possesses an unique bipartite body consisting of wide unbranched, asymmetrical anterior section and small narrow tail-like posterior section. macrofossil is preserved through carbonaceous compression. Its appearance different known macroalgae but similar to Vetulicolia early Cambrian Chengjiang Biota. species, which broad smooth, shows only indistinctly arranged suspected gill slits nearly horizontal pharyngeal groove, without significant segmented structures. Owing lack samples, specific biological properties taxa are still undefined. discovery indicates that exceptional lagerstätte with great potential for preservation Precambrian life Furthermore, differences diversity Miaohe Doushantuo Formation Shibantan Dengying Three Gorges area Hubei Province.

Abstract The Jiangchuan biota is a diverse macrofossil assemblage from the Jiucheng Member of Dengying Formation, in uppermost Ediacaran (Sinian) Eastern Yunnan, Southwest China. This well known for its macroalgal fossils preserved as carbonaceous compressions, but co‐occurring taxa have remained poorly documented. Here, we present new discoidal macrofossils biota, which interpret eumetazoan‐grade organisms uncertain affinities. These disc‐like are smooth, well‐defined impressions with tube‐like peripheral zone. Most thick, three‐dimensional ring centrally, possible remnant perioral musculature and innervation. morphology these problematica invites comparison other putative Neoproterozoic medusoids Nanfen Xingmincun Formations Jilin Liaoning areas, Northeast China, enigmatic spiral‐like fossil Eoandromeda octobrachiata Doushantuoian Wenghui Guizhou. Based on shared presence central, dorsally oriented ring‐like structures fossils, speculate that annular nervous system may been widespread among organisms, it might represent plesiomorphic feature Eumetazoa.
