The pyrolysis of eight commercial polyethylene grades in a fluidized bed reactor (FBR, Hamburger Verfahren) operating at 750 °C (residence time ∼3 s) is carried out to show that the gaseous and liquid product spectra are very similar. reaction temperature sole parameter major impact for outcome FBR between 700 800 °C. gives good yield ethylene (31 wt %) propylene (15 moderate amounts methane (11 %). Solid products (soots) hardly formed. A stochastic analysis shows molar linear alkane alkene with less than 4–5 carbon atoms (making up 75 % products) confidently described by geometric distributions Geom(1 – α). remaining 25 mainly aromatics 6 or more atoms. formation alkanes interpreted result from random chain scission probability α 0.82 n-alkyls, followed hydrogen abstraction: 1-alkenes competition β-scission 1,2-hydrogen shifts an 0.64 alkyl radicals. intermediate n-alkyls primary radicals key; weak bond scissions (at branching points) not relevant decomposition parameters dependent, giving access activation energies 47(4) kJ/mol 54(2) difference shift on interval 600 900 suggest directly formed transported away hot zone (surface ablation). same applied published data different alkenes present too.
