This
study

Abstract
Background
Depression
and
anxiety
symptoms
among
medical
students
are
often
a
concern.

Patient
Health
Questionnaire-Four
(PHQ-4),

tool
for
depression
screening,

commonly
used

Introduction
Burnout
and
mental
health
among
animal
care
professionals
(ACHPs)
has
received
increasing
attention
in
recent
years.
Despite
rapid
growth
of
research
this
area,
the
wellbeing

work

volunteer

settings
minimal
attention.
Method
An
anonymous
online
survey
was
created
to
evaluate
staff
volunteers’
experiences
animal-related
loss,
rates
professional
fulfillment
burnout,
health,
perceived
organizational
support,
resilience.
Participants

1695
(72%
ACHPs,
20%
other
staff)
volunteers
(7%)
were
recruited
through
relevant
listservs
platforms,
flyers
on
grounds.

ACHPs
reported
higher
levels
anxiety,
depression,
burnout

than
volunteers.

losses
experienced

past
year
unexpected
death
(80%)
