This work synthesizes a xerogel from sol–gel synthesis strategy and supports it on N-doped carbon support spent coffee biomass (Mn(II)O/N-CC, hereafter MnO) as an efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst in alkaline electrolytes. The effects of N-CC content MnO nanoparticle size, dispersion, distribution, morphology, electrochemistry ORR are discussed. SEM TEM measurements show that increasing the during gelation improved dispersion particle size thermal treatment, ORR’s electrochemical active surface area. Several physiochemical characterizations clear relationship between catalysts activities. best catalyst, MnO/N-CC-5, had even distribution 27 nm nanoparticles support. MnO/N-CC-5 almost identical kinetics stability to those state-of-the-art Pt/C 0.1 M KOH electrolytes, losing only 10 mV half-wave potential after 5000 cycles retaining 96% current for over h continuous chronoamperometric stability. By measuring areas various by cyclic voltammetry at different scan rates double layer capacitance (Cdl) ECSA, were shown have enhanced activity. XPS analysis explains activity terms Mn3+/Mn4+ ratio, mechanism was proposed. These findings suggest could be cathode fuel cells, biofuel metal–air batteries, other energy conversion devices.
