Abstract
Price
shocks
create
and
exacerbate
poverty.
Being
able
to
promptly
predict
their
effect,
instead
of
waiting
for
households
fall
into
poverty,
try
assist
them
later,
may
greatly
reduce
the
severity
shock’s
damage.
However,
understanding
shock
targeting
those
most
likely
be
disrupted
requires
a
level
data
often
unavailable
in
developing
world.
This
manuscript
uses
Mexican
National
Household
Survey
Incomes
Expenditure
quantify
household
income
needs
resulting
from
recent
food
price
spikes.
We
estimate
complete
demand
system
that
accounts
substitution
effects
across
items
accurately
calculate
cost
poverty
alleviation
policy
tailored
escalation.
Our
findings
reveal
increased
such
require
an
additional
9%
increase
budgets
keep
welfare
like
beginning
year.
Demographic
comparisons
led
by
women
monetary
aid
regardless
geographic
location.
