Furfural (FAL), a platform molecule derived from biomass through acid-catalyzed processes, holds significant potential for producing various value-added chemicals. Its unique chemical structure, comprising furan ring and an aldehyde functional group, enables diverse transformation pathways to yield products such as furfuryl alcohol, furan, tetrahydrofuran, other industrially relevant compounds. Consequently, optimizing catalytic processes FAL conversion has garnered substantial attention, particularly in selectivity efficiency. The liquid-phase hydrogenation of demonstrated advantages, including enhanced catalyst stability higher product yields. Among the catalysts investigated, mesoporous materials have emerged promising candidates because their high surface area, tunable pore ability support highly dispersed active sites. These attributes are critical maximizing performance across reactions, hydrogenation. This review provides comprehensive overview recent advances design hydrogenation, focusing on synthesis strategies, metal dispersion control, structural optimization enhance performance. It explores noble metal-based catalysts, Pd systems, well transition-metal-based alternatives Co-, Cu-, Ni-based highlighting electronic bimetallic interactions, site properties. Additionally, metal–organic frameworks introduced both precursors thermally materials. Finally, key challenges that require further investigation discussed, stability, deactivation mechanisms, strategies reduce reliance external hydrogen sources, impact solvent effects selectivity. By integrating these insights, this perspective development efficient sustainable systems valorization.
