Abstract Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) technology has increasingly been considered for biomass conversion applications because of its economic and environmental advantages. As an HTC product, hydrochar widely used in the agricultural fields decades. A CiteSpace-based system analysis was conducting a bibliometric study to understand state application research from 2011 2021. Researchers had basic understanding between 2016 when they discovered could apply improvement projects. Keyword clustering results literature published 2017–2021 showed that soil quality plant growth were major topics, followed by carbon capture greenhouse gas emissions, organic pollutant removal, heavy metal adsorption bioavailability. This review also pointed out challenge perspective application, namely: (1) effects on soils need be clarified terms scope conditions; (2) influence microorganisms needs investigated illustrate impact emissions; (3) combined contaminant sorption experiments conducted large-scale applications; (4) more reveal benefits coupling with anaerobic digestion technology. suggested it would valuable create database contains detailed information how got different sources, preparation conditions can applied field.
