Abstract Drawing on the institutional view of legitimacy theory, we examine whether and under which conditions a policy tool, mandatory corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting, enforced by constituents positively triggers firms to make substantive environmental responses. Using China's 2008 CSR reporting as quasi‐natural experiment difference‐in‐differences estimation approach, results reveal that after implementation this policy, show substantially higher green innovation performance than non‐CSR firms. We further find effect is stronger for located in areas with high enforcement intensity, state‐owned enterprises those levels media coverage. Moreover, nuanced investigation coverage laden negative or positive tone, both strengthen relationship between disclosure innovation.

The European Union (EU) countries have declared the ambitious goal of providing carbon-free economic development. Considering this, EU are going to pursue relevant policies for a step-by-step refusal mining and coal energy, consequently reducing greenhouse gas emissions. analysis theoretical background showed that renewable energy is core dimension In this case, paper aims justify impact dimensions (knowledge spillover, innovation, environmental regulation) could boost penetration into all sectors levels. following methods applied test hypotheses: stationarity testing in panels; cross-section dependence testing; cointegration estimation heterogeneous parameter models. data obtained from Eurostat, OECD, World Data Bank. object research country period 2010–2020. findings confirm hypothesis on statistically significant innovation knowledge spillover energy. addition, regulation has mediating positive effect interconnections among innovations, should development appropriate regulations, which be effective transparent stakeholders.
