A higher denitrification rate was realized via controlling the mass ratio of pyrite and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) under natural aerobic conditions. The results showed that suitable PHBV could be 1:2 with its removal efficiency nitrogen phosphorus 99.7 53.4%, respectively. PHBV/pyrite system has formed spatial patterns biofilm community, such as Dechloromons attached to surface, Rhodocyclaceae Acidovorax suppled sludge, which highlighted autotrophic–heterotrophic synergy achieved. difference analysis among functional genes detected by high-throughput quantitative polymerase chain reaction indicated surface in pyrite/PHBV is hot area methane production, denitrifying process, removal. Network there a closer connection on also supporting speculation for interaction various system. key gene co-occurrence revealed lig, nirS, aspA are keystone cellulose degradation, denitrification, S cycling, These suggested blending

Abstract Biofiltration is a water purification technology playing pivotal role in producing safe drinking water. This attracts many interests worldwide due to its advantages, such as no addition of chemicals, low energy input, and high removal efficiency organic compounds, undesirable taste odours, pathogens. The current review describes the microbial ecology three biofiltration processes that are routinely used treatment plants, i.e. (i) rapid sand filtration (RSF), (ii) granular activated carbon (GACF), (iii) slow (SSF). We summarised compared characteristics, performance, corresponding (newly revealed) mechanisms processes. Specifically, different biofilter communities removing nutrients, pathogens were reviewed. Finally, we highlight limitations challenges study production, propose future perspectives for obtaining comprehensive understanding biofiltration, which needed promote optimise further application. Key points • Biofilters composed complex microbiomes, primarily shaped by quality . Conventional biofilters contribute address safety Studies may underestimate active/functional microbiomes
