Although the shift to renewable energy is essential combat climate crisis, current linear economic model in European photovoltaic (PV) industry creates increasing challenges related resource depletion and growing waste streams at PV module's end-of-life stage. However, adaptation of circular practices different stages value chain (VC) still its infancy, date there no clarity on status CE implementation from a holistic perspective. Therefore, this study uses results twenty interviews with VC representatives shed light goals, barriers, enablers for transition towards CE. The qualitative analysis these findings serves as foundation developing strategic map that identifies all aspects their interrelationship along steps industry, material sourcing recycling. These form basis second outcome our study, "photovoltaic framework" which theorizes four major strategies are applicable multiple stages, particular (1) reinserting by-products, (2) digitizing VC, (3) preparing modules reuse, (4) recycling recovery. This approach requires cross-sector collaboration among stakeholders ensure systematic change more transparency VC. future research should quantify initial further explore viable business models overcome barriers intensification

While the uptake of solar energy has been a success in recent years, PV panels will cause an increasing waste problem coming decades. At same time, it is important to further stimulate investments solutions reach climate ambitions and Sustainable Development Goals. In this paper, we investigate when circular economy strategies business models can enable while mitigating its problem. We use focus group data from Flanders (Belgium) address demand side different market segments outside dominant residential homeowners. These markets have common that they are governed or mediated by organizations contain business-to-business business-to-government features. Our results show organizational mainly driven lower costs, independence, secured access energy, depends on viable case. most cases, lack development boundary conditions limit enabling potential options. Given current crisis challenges stemming electrification mobility, recommend policy makers invest regulatory frameworks support implementation innovative technologies both improved circularity outcomes operational expenditures.

Enhanced data exchange among different actors and stages of the value chain (VC) is key to mastering transition toward a circular solar industry. Data on in-use products assets enable early assessments adequate strategy at end first life cycle, which includes reuse photovoltaic (PV) modules in second cycle. In this context, digital platforms represent proven technology facilitate information between along chain. However, that are targeted specifically fostering economy (CE) industry under-researched. We apply Design Science Research build evaluate an artefact for platform enables collecting comprehensive cycle by involving stakeholders. enrichment incentivized two use cases outcome our study: (i) assessment schema (devised collaboration with third-party certifier) designed gather relevant creating product passport; (ii) online marketplace match supply demand panels (supported standardized testing repurposing infrastructure). Initial insights from Switzerland (our pilot area) pave way implementing proposed concept. Future studies should investigate scalability European context.

Abstract The rapid expansion of the global solar photovoltaic (PV) market as part transition to a low-carbon energy future will increase both demand for raw materials used in PV product manufacturing well panel waste volumes. There is an urgent need industry businesses adopt circular business models, and support this process through targeted tools methods that can facilitate innovation such models. This paper employs action-oriented case study methodology, drawing on insights garnered from five demonstrator cases have applied validated Circular Business Model Innovation (CBMI) framework within sector. Results show how was practice during ideation, design, experimentation, scaling phases process. Specifically, results experimental iterative approach found critical assess viability, desirability, feasibility strategies. study’s empirical testing with context Economy complements earlier theoretical conceptualizations model processes.
