Excess unmanaged nitrogen pollutes the environment. A sustainable wastewater treatment system must achieve better pollutant removal efficiency at a lower cost, and feasibility of integrating biological into bio-electrochemical systems (BES) has been reported as tool in green technology. Nitrogen form nitrate (NO3) is common both surface ground waters, high level NO3 makes water unsuitable for drinking water. This analysis review BES treating polluted investigate BES's components operational factors their importance on to design more powerful but economic systems. The efficiencies were analyzed by influence electrode materials, working mode, number chambers, type inoculum, capacity, microbial community structure. Overall, significantly rate. parameters, such inoculum systems' deemed important have influenced when random forest classification algorithm. Proteobacteria Firmicute prominent phyla observed Besides denitrification (abundance narG, nirS, nirK, nosZI, nosZII genes) process BES, there evidence electrochemical support anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) hzsB or ANAMMOX-specific 16S rRNA dissimilatory reduction (DNRA) nrfA processes. Our suggest that continuous two-chamber with cathode anode materials granular carbon paper, respectively, denitrifying microbes type, would contribute optimum efficiencies.
