A large variety of pharmaceutical compounds have recently been detected in wastewater and natural water systems. This review highlighted the significance removing compounds, which are considered indispensable emerging contaminants, from Various advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), including UV-H2O2, Fenton photo-Fenton, ozone-based processes, photocatalysis, physical such as sonolysis, microwave, electron beam irradiation, regarded most viable methods to eliminate different categories discussed. All these AOPs exhibit great promising techniques, catalytic degradation process advantages, disadvantages each technique were deliberated. Heterogeneous photocatalysis employing metal oxides, particularly anatase TiO2 nanoparticles catalysts activated by UV light was reviewed terms electron–hole separation, migration charge carriers catalyst surfaces, redox potential carriers. brief overview also emphasized that TiO2-based nanomaterials photocatalysts, a combination other enhanced photocatalytic efficiency. Finally, challenges applying environmental remediation treatments degrade mass spectroscopic analysis biological activity test by-products contaminants resulting summarized.

The over-consumption, inappropriate use and dumping of pharmaceutical products have had adverse effects on ecosystems. presence contaminants in surface waters drinking water is worldwide concern, due to their ability produce physiological even at low concentrations humans animals. These compounds find way into the environment mainly through human animal waste, mode action persistence are among today's major environmental challenges. Traditional wastewater treatment methods used address these challenges many significant drawbacks. In response, adsorption gaining popularity within scientific community its high performance, cost, ease handling diversity adsorbents. This review highlights application a variety adsorbents for efficient removal pharmaceuticals from different media. Among adsorbents, clays attracted particular attention thanks economic potential efficiency. Their represents promising solution this problem.

The focus of this review article was to outline the sources, pathways, effects, occurrence, and spatial distribution most prescribed pharmaceuticals in wastewater receiving waters South Africa. Google Scholar, Web Science, Scopus were used gather data from different regions. A zone-wise classification method determine deficiencies regions This revealed that over 100 pharmaceutical compounds have been reported Africa’s various water sources wastewater, with studies highest concentrations being documented Gauteng Kwa-Zulu Natal. concentration samples ranged ng/L µg/L. Aspirin, ketoprofen, diclofenac, ibuprofen, naproxen, erythromycin, tetracycline, sulfamethoxazole, acetaminophen, streptomycin, ciprofloxacin, ampicillin, carbamazepine, atenolol, pindolol, efavirenz, zidovudine residues among frequently detected bodies wastewaters Based on data, has number (108) waste surface water, Northern Cape having no monitoring evidence. Therefore, precisely ascertain geographical contaminants Africa, recommends further research be carried out track their occurrence aquatic environments WWTP, especially isolated like Limpopo.
