Abstract Businesses are turning to bio‐based, compostable plastic packaging as a circular economy solution global pollution. However, there is lack of proper waste management systems for collection and processing. Through an international research initiative, social innovation lab was undertaken in Brazil, Canada, Poland the United Kingdom understand address key barriers closing bio‐based loop. Based upon qualitative data set 100 stakeholder interviews three phases workshop activities each country, grounded model generated illustrate how competing views actions inhibiting system packaging. Key issues were end‐of‐life processing infrastructure, contamination facilities absent or ineffective regulation. A systemic approach that includes shared responsibility simplified design materials equitable regulation reduce susceptibility greenwashing can improve collaboration meet goals.

The overconsumption of conventional plastics has led to several environmental and social-economic issues related plastic pollution, carbon emissions resource depletion. Acknowledging these issues, the introduction alternatives such as bioplastics been promoted by national, supranational, international organizations. However, market for materials is still niche, where businesses are uncertain about benefits costs associated with use innovative materials. Successful (and sustainable) uptake will depend on public acceptance changes in consumer behavior. Therefore, this study aims explore how consumers' orientation towards sustainability utilization bio-based biodegradable plastics. Consumer knowledge performance expectations also analyzed. This employed a predominately quantitative research approach, self-administered online survey was used collect opinions consumers across society using snowball sampling technique. Results show continued confusion, unrealistic expectations, value-action gap. These elements may have consequences broader implications value chain. A key implication that both policy makers should address barriers through enhanced communication relevant information alongside improved awareness education.

Replacing fossil-based feedstock with renewable alternatives is a crucial step towards circular economy. The bio-based plastics currently on the market are predominantly used in single-use applications, remarkably limited uptake durable products. This study explores current state of art plastic use consumer products and opportunities barriers encountered by product developers adopting these materials. A design analysis 60 containing plastics, 12 company interviews, identified pursuit sustainability goals targets as primary driver for despite uncertainties regarding their reduced environmental impact. lack knowledge properties contributes to slow adoption Furthermore, recycling infrastructure, availability higher costs compared alternatives, significant adoption. This study investigated the factors influencing consumers' switching intentions to biodegradable plastic products. Applying a modified Motivation-Opportunity-Ability (MOA) framework, we analyzed impact of such as environmental concern, novelty seeking, negative attitude, perceived consumer effectiveness, green availability, and knowledge on intention, while also examining moderating effect greenwashing. Results showed that attitude from motivation dimension, ability had significant effects intentions. Furthermore, it was found level greenwashing moderated is for its focus perceptions behavioral towards plastics eco-friendly products, although there room debate about actual effectiveness. Based findings, present practical implications include importance education, need companies provide transparent information, policy considerations strengthen sovereignty.

As awareness of environmental issues deepens and the demand for sustainability grows among societies, businesses, consumers, minimizing impact food packaging has become increasingly important. Bioplastics offer a promising solution due to their use renewable resources (such as plants), biodegradability, ability retain protective properties traditional plastics. This review discusses recent advancements trends in sustainable packaging, emphasizing role bioplastics. Several typical types bioplastics are introduced, along with an analysis advantages limitations. Furthermore, this study investigates consumers’ attitudes toward bioplastic perceptions its practical use. The findings reveal that consumers generally hold positive attitude bioplastics, particularly appreciating biodegradable compostable properties. However, expectations often overly high, they believe must meet two key criteria: being made from raw materials fully or compostable. Additionally, most lack knowledge dispose waste properly. issue highlights critical areas policymakers: aligning consumer realistic goals educating public on correct sorting disposal practices.

Bioplastics have been presented as a sustainable alternative to products derived from fossil sources. In response, industries developed innovative using biopolymers across various sectors, such food, packaging, biomedical, and construction. However, consumer acceptance remains crucial for their widespread adoption. This study aims explore public sentiment toward bioplastics, focusing on emotions expressed Reddit. A dataset of 5041 Reddit comments was collected keywords associated with bioplastics the extraction process facilitated by Python-based libraries like pandas, NLTK, NumPy. The analysis conducted NRCLex, broadly used lexicon. overall findings suggest that trust, anticipation, joy were most dominant in time frame 2014–2024, indicating emotional response towards has mostly positive. Negative fear, sadness, anger less prevalent, although an intense noted 2018. Findings also indicate temporal co-occurrence between significant events related changes among users. Although representativeness sample is limited, results this support need develop real-time monitoring public’s responses. Thus, it will be possible design communication campaigns more aligned needs.
