Abstract
Businesses
are
turning
to
bio‐based,
compostable
plastic
packaging
as
a
circular
economy
solution
global
pollution.
However,
there
is
lack
of
proper
waste
management
systems
for
collection
and
processing.
Through
an
international
research
initiative,
social
innovation
lab
was
undertaken
in
Brazil,
Canada,
Poland
the
United
Kingdom
understand
address
key
barriers
closing
bio‐based
loop.
Based
upon
qualitative
data
set
100
stakeholder
interviews
three
phases
workshop
activities
each
country,
grounded
model
generated
illustrate
how
competing
views
actions
inhibiting
system
packaging.
Key
issues
were
end‐of‐life
processing
infrastructure,
contamination
facilities
absent
or
ineffective
regulation.
A
systemic
approach
that
includes
shared
responsibility

overconsumption
of
conventional
plastics
