Abstract Firms can achieve trinomial sustainability goals if they constantly build and rejuvenate their capabilities to adapt new situations. However, few studies consider the interrelationships between distinct pertinent sustainable development impact of these on firm performance under diverse contexts, especially in emerging economies. Drawing dynamic capability theory, we developed a model test links capability, theorized as higher order relational managerial capabilities, lower firm's performance. Data collected from 210 large Indian manufacturing firms is analyzed using PLS‐SEM. Results confirm that has facilitating effects environmental social directly indirectly through capability. Although partially mediates link performance, it does not Further, aforementioned relationships are affected by forces firms' environment. Most direct indirect negatively moderated organizational inertia positively turbulence. By investigating hierarchically structured this study guides make strategic choices regarding resource calibration for sustainability. The recommends organizations looking integrate part management should look at sequential combinations existing resources different targets. study's findings also urge policymakers conditions while developing reforms.
