In the evolving field of photocatalysis, heterojunction photocatalysts, especially Type II and S-scheme, latter being also known as direct-Z scheme heterojunctions, are gaining increasing recognition for their pivotal role in enhancing photocatalytic efficiency. These characterized by similar band alignments but distinct charge transfer mechanisms, play a crucial facilitating enhanced separation transfer. This comprehensive review delves into experimental methodologies essential characterizing these with focus on understanding unique mechanisms. Key methods such Electron Spin Resonance (ESR), radical trapping experiments, Photoluminescence (PL) probing, Nitro Blue Tetrazolium (NBT) transformation, Surface Photovoltage Spectroscopy (SPS), photodeposition metals, in-situ X-ray Photoelectron (in-situ XPS) analysis discussed detail. Each technique is presented necessary guidelines accompanying information to ensure appropriate effective use pinpointing specifics processes. The concludes that right selection techniques mechanism staggered type heterojunctions achieving further advancements photocatalysis.
