Purpose This paper aims to investigate how the build orientation simultaneously affects tensile properties, geometrical measurements and surface roughness in material extrusion (MEX) produced parts. Design/methodology/approach An extensive experimental campaign was designed carried out elucidate relationship between rotation angles (input), defining part within volume, (output) variables measured by using 3D models reconstruction, tester testing machine. Response methodology is used capture trend of each output relative input, while principal component analysis identify relationships among outputs, providing a holistic understanding influences mechanical characteristics. Findings The study reveals that significantly nearly all variables, with pronounced dependency on out-of-plane angle. A key finding inverse correlation strength both roughness. indicates optimizing can enhance minimizing defects. Originality/value research, newer addition existing literature, contributes field additive manufacturing (AM) offering an innovative interaction geometric precision relation orientation. It enhances MEX processes provides valuable insights into orientation, thereby improving competitiveness AM over traditional production methods.

The advantages of field-assisted laser additive manufacturing in optimizing microstructure and performance are increasingly recognized. Recently, we investigated the effects acoustic field (AF) assisted powder bed fusion (LPBF) on mechanical properties 316L stainless steel (SS) SS/WC composite materials. Due to streaming cavitation, LPBF achieved optimized properties. Building our previous research AF-assisted LPBF, introduced magnetic (MF) compound (MF+AF) study their SS, 1 wt% 3 WC/316L SS. Application MF induces induced currents melt pool due Thomson-Seebek effect. interaction between generates thermoelectric force (TEMF) convection (TEMC), which inhibit growth columnar grains enhance mass heat transfer pool. Compound reduced dislocation density refined grain size, alleviated concentration distribution orientation, ultimate tensile strength samples reached 777 MPa elongation at break 57.5%. Interestingly, for both resulted a decrease performance, with strengths as low 677 elongations 25.1%. This is because affects uniform WC particles, causing significant agglomeration severe unmelted defects material, leading performance.

Purpose Manufacturing companies still struggle to integrate additive manufacturing (AM) technologies with existing traditional technologies. This paper explores AM technology integration into a global company from an operational capability perspective. Design/methodology/approach The research was conducted using single case study in collaboration heavy-duty vehicle manufacturer. Data were collected through focus group and interviews representing management engineering roles. Additional data meetings, documents, field notes observations. Subsequently, the analyzed thematically. Findings findings reveal that, despite embarking on its journey, it encountered challenges, including cognitive fixation, situational awareness, ambiguous ownership make-or-buy dilemma. Furthermore, showed that developed capabilities – such as developing proficiency know-how, continuous use of technology, practices for cross-collaboration initiatives business cases address these challenges. A facilitation model developed, outlining essential actions prioritized short-term, mid-term long-term. These leverage challenges integration.
