Developing bio-based and biodegradable materials has become important to meet current market demands, government regulations, environmental concerns. The packaging industry, particularly for food beverages, is known be the world's largest consumer of plastics. Therefore, demand sustainable alternatives in this area needed industry's requirements. This review presents most commonly used materials, bio-polyesters, polysaccharide-based polymers. At same time, a major problem presented: fungal growth and, consequently, spoilage. Different types antifungal compounds, both natural synthetic, are explained terms structure mechanism action. main uses these compounds their degree effectiveness detailed. State-of-the-art studies have shown clear trend increasing on incorporating antifungals since 2000. bibliometric networks showed active packaging, polymers, films, antimicrobial activities, essential oils, starch polysaccharides, nanocomposites, nanoparticles. combination development with ability control promotes sustainability innovative enhancement sector.
