Background Hearing loss (HL) can affect communication in complex ways. Understanding how adults with HL reflect on and conceptualise the way they listen (metacognition) is required if interventions, outcome measures used to evaluate them, are address barriers functional arising from HL. Objectives This study describes experience report processes, behaviours, components of listening, as presented published studies. Design Systematic review meta-synthesis qualitative Methods searches identified English-language, peer-reviewed journal articles reporting results or mixed-methods studies adults’ perceived listening abilities. Medline, PsychInfo, Web Science, Embase, Google Scholar were searched inception November 2021. Handsearching reference lists included additional for inclusion. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) checklist was appraise studies’ methodological quality. Data analysed using thematic meta-synthesis. Grading Recommendations Assessment, Development Evaluation (GRADE) Confidence Evidence Reviews QUALitative (CERQual) approach assessed confidence findings. Two reviewers independently completed all screening quality appraisal. Thematic GRADE CERQual assessment by one reviewer confirmed a second reviewer. Discrepancies resolved through discussion. There are substantial individual differences in the benefit that can be obtained from visual cues during speech perception. Here, 113 normally hearing participants between ages of 18 and 60 years old completed a three-part experiment investigating reliability predictors audiovisual for acoustically degraded speech. Audiovisual was calculated as relative intelligibility (at individual-level) approximately matched group-level) auditory-only materials at three levels linguistic structure: meaningful sentences, monosyllabic words, consonants minimal syllables. This measure stable across sessions materials, suggesting shared mechanism integration operates structure. Information transmission analyses suggested this may related to simple phonetic cue extraction: sentence-level reliably predicted by ability discriminate place articulation consonant-level. Finally, whereas unimodal perception cognitive measures (matrix reasoning vocabulary) demographics (age gender), only perceptual abilities: Better lipreading subclinically poorer (speech reception thresholds) independently enhanced benefit. work has implications practices quantifying research identifying strategies enhance multimodal communication loss.

Hearing loss (HL) represents a major health problem worldwide, and increasingly so due to population ageing new leisure activities, such as video gaming or virtual reality experiences. In fact, certain micronutrient deficiencies, along excessive consumption of specific macronutrients, have been related This study aimed examine the association dietary fat intake, nutritional biomarkers, serum metabolic signature in aviation pilots controls. A cohort pilots, chronically exposed noise pollution at work, was compared non-exposed university workers (controls). function determined by tonal audiometry intake assessed three 24-h recalls. addition, lipoprotein profiles well homocysteine (Hcy), folate, vitamins B12 D were analysed. Two multiple linear regression models adjusted for age constructed explain variability. prevalence similar elevated cohorts (controls: 64% vs. noise-exposed: 65%), when American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) classification. When comparing cohorts, although no significant differences found Hcy folate levels, controls had significantly lower concentrations and, conversely, higher lipids values (triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol LDL-cholesterol subfractions), suggesting possible involvement CV risk control cohort. noise-exposed cohort, associated flight hours, Hcy, (r2 = 0.439), while controls, vitamin 0.474). Abstract Wind noise impairs the functionality of hearing aids and hearables outdoors or during sports by interfering with communication signals. This study aims to visualize wind generation patterns around human head validated scale-resolved flow simulations. For first time, three-dimensional turbulent field at speeds 10 km/h 20 a female, male an artificial is analyzed. It possible extract non-accessible data even inside body, e.g., pressure deep ear cavity in front eardrum. Head-geometry-independent features are identified. In temple area, large-scale vortex shedding occurs. Small-scale vortices detach upper edge pinna across entire area. At typical microphone positions behind worn devices, fluctuations more pronounced than those auditory canal entrance. The tragus plays decisive role attenuating entrance canal. Anatomically exact canals ensure that velocity attenuated effectively compared one. km/h, A-weighted levels recorded location devices exceed 85 dB(A). results lead understanding effects how they increase perception threshold for recognition. Abstract Introduction Ototoxicity associated with platinum-based chemotherapy is highly prevalent and can cause detrimental consequences among cancer survivors. Discussion In this article, we highlight important aspects of the evaluation ototoxicity aim to increase awareness Oncologists in regard. Standard pure tone audiometry alone inadequate for context. Comprehensive consistent hearing tests should be implemented a monitoring surveillance program. High-frequency (10–16 kHz) sensitive tool detection ototoxic loss at onset. addition threshold audiometry, measures speech comprehension (both quiet noise) add useful information real-life situations. Not only loss, but also tinnitus imbalance are common patients who receive chemotherapy, debilitating effects upon quality life population. Moreover, self-report cochlear vestibular handicaps provide valuable regarding impact ototoxicity. Conclusions It vital build about variety symptoms status along self-reported handicap program appropriate investigation management.

Abstract Background Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is an abrupt of hearing, still idiopathic in most cases. Several mechanisms have been proposed including genetic and epigenetic interrelationships also considering iron homeostasis genes, ferroptosis cellular stressors such as excess dysfunctional mitochondrial superoxide dismutase activity. Results We investigated 206 SSNHL patients 420 healthy controls for the following variants pathway: SLC40A1 − 8CG (ferroportin; FPN1), HAMP 582AG (hepcidin; HEPC), HFE C282Y H63D (homeostatic regulator), TF P570S (transferrin) SOD2 A16V dismutase-2 gene. Among patients, 8GG homozygotes were overrepresented (8.25% vs 2.62%; P = 0.0015) well 16VV genotype (32.0% 24.3%; 0.037) accounting increased risk (OR 3.34; 1.54–7.29 OR 1.47; 1.02–2.12, respectively). Moreover, LINE-1 methylation was inversely related ( r 2 0.042; 0.001) with score assessed pure tone average (PTA, dB HL), trend maintained after stratification (Δ + 8.99 HL Δ 6.07 HL). In multivariate investigations, principal component analysis (PCA) yielded PC1 age, LINE-1, , ) PC2 (sex, SOD2, among five generated PCs, logistic regression ascribed to inverse association moderate/severe/profound 0.60; 0.42–0.86; 0.0006) severe/profound 0.52; 0.35–0.76; 0.001).
