Plastic particles can impact the environmental fate and bioavailability of essential inorganic micronutrients non-essential (toxic) metals. The sorption metals to plastic has been demonstrated be facilitated by ageing, a phenomenon encompassing an array physical, chemical, biological processes. This study deploys factorial experiment untangle role different ageing processes in determining Plastics made three polymer types were aged both through abiotic (ultraviolet irradiation, UV) biotic (through incubation with multispecies algal inoculum forming biofilm) under controlled laboratory conditions. Pristine samples characterized for their physiochemical properties Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy water contact angle measurements. Their affinity toward aluminum (Al) copper (Cu) aqueous solutions was then assessed as response variable. All (alone or combined) influenced surface resulting reduced hydrophobicity, changes functional groups (i.e., increase oxygen containing after UV appearance marked bands amides polysaccharides biofouling), well nanomorphology. Al Cu instead statistically dependent (p < 0.01) on degree biofouling covering specimens. Biofouled displayed fact substantial metal causing depletion up tenfold compared pristine polymers, regardless type presence absence other treatments. These results confirm hypothesis that accumulation is substantially driven biofilm present plastics. findings also highlight importance investigating implications nutrients availability environments impacted this pollution.

Abstract Plastics pollutants, especially microplastics (MPs, <5 mm in diameter) and levofloxacin hydrochloride (Lev‐HCl) often co‐exist the aquatic environment. To explore adsorption processes mechanisms of Lev‐HCl by non‐degradable MPs, this study, H 2 O oxidation was used to age polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) MPs. The results demonstrated that equilibrium capacity increased significantly after aging, as ‐PET (1.167 mg/g) > PET (0.995 mg/g), ‐PS (1.057 PS (0.957 ‐PVC (1.107 PVC (0.975 mg/g). After hydrogen bond (‐OH) more obvious, π‐π interactions were enhanced. These MPs mainly adsorbed micropore filling (contributions: 65.9%, 56%, 63.5%). current study highlights potential act a vector for environment, aging.
