Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) could have great application potential and technological development. However, there are no studies that quantitatively rigorously estimated the environmental impacts in future scenario. This study fills this gap through an innovative approach consisting of patent-based forecasting prospective life cycle assessment (LCA). The analysis 58 selected patents reveals SOFCs (on average) +53% specific power which lead to a 56% mass reduction compared current SOFC. LCA shows average global warming (GWP) 50%. tubular layout is more sustainable than planar one by about 15%. GWP decreases with increasing smaller sizes thicknesses. Finally, ductile SOFCs, dedicated mobile applications dynamic loads, greater stationary but still equal half SOFCs. All these results therefore confirm patented SOFC developments on sustainability, arguing favour their industrial development massive future.
