Abstract Main group Bi‐based materials have gained popularity as N 2 reduction reaction (NRR) photo/electrocatalysts due to their ability inhibit competitive H evolution reactions (HER) and the unique adsorption activities. The introduction of defects in catalysts represents a highly effective strategy for enhancing light absorption, promoting efficient separation photogenerated carriers, optimizing activity free radicals, regulating electronic structure, improving catalytic performance. In this review, we outline various applications state defect engineering elucidate impact vacancies on NRR particular, types defects, methods tailoring, advanced characterization techniques, well with abundant corresponding behavior were elucidated detail. Finally, main challenges opportunities future development defective are discussed, which provides comprehensive theoretical guidance field.
