Granular activated carbon (GAC), a porous carbon-based material, provides increased attachment space for functional microorganisms and enhances nitrogen removal by facilitating extracellular electron transfer in the anammox process. This study investigates effects of GAC on biosynthesis microbial secretions (MESs) explores roles these activities. Four lab-scale reactors were operated: two downstream UASB (D1 D2) receiving effluents from upstream (U1: no-GAC, U2: yes-GAC). Our results indicate that MESs enhanced with addition GAC. The effluent U2 exhibited 59.62 % higher amino acid content than U1. These contributed to an increase loading rate (NLR) reactors. Specifically, NLR D1 130.5 142.7 g N/m3/day, D2, it escalated 137.5 202.8 likely through acting as cross-feeding substrates or vital nutrients. D2 also showed bacterial activity, enriched Ca. Brocadia population hao gene abundance. Furthermore, this revealed sludge has significantly polymeric substances (EPS) (48.71 mg/g VSS) larger average granule size (1.201 ± 0.119 mm) compared sludge. Overall, GAC-stimulated may have performance

Oxytetracycline (OTC), as one of the most representative emerging pollutants, accumulates in municipal wastewater treatment plants through various pathways, posing significant challenges for future engineering promotion partial denitrification/anammox (PD/A) process. This paper investigated operational characteristics PD/A granular system under OTC stress, analyzing self-regulation mechanism sludge system. The results showed that when concentration was less than 100 mg/L, its short-term inhibition on become stronger with increase concentration, and there a slight decrease functional bacterial activity. However, between 150 300 ability PD converted NO3--N to NO2--N gradually weakened, Anammox activity significantly inhibited. Under long-term stress high (20 30 mg/L), nitrogen removal performance deteriorated. Batch tests inhibited (NTR: 73.77% 50.17%). bacteria rapidly decreased, μ(NH4+-N) decreasing from 1.81 mg N/gVSS/h 0.39 N/gVSS/h. continuous EPS content (185.39 210.86 mg/gVSS) stimulation indicated resisted adverse environmental interference achieved self-protection by regulating secretion. overloaded (30 cell lysis deactivation leaded content. relative abundance Candidatus_Brocadia (2.32% 0.93%) Thaure (12.63% 7.82%) key factor gradual deterioration denitrification performance. study expected provide guidance process cope antibiotics other pollutants (short-term shock stress).
