Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), a highly toxic and carcinogenic contaminant, presents significant hazard to aquatic ecosystems human health. Developing environmentally friendly, cost-effective, biodegradable, easily recyclable adsorbents is critical for efficient Cr(VI) removal. Here, we present an innovative solution using Mg/Al layered double hydroxide (LDH)-modified sphagnum cellulose gel (MgAl/LDH@SMCG), prepared by pre-treating cellulose, crosslinking with polyvinyl alcohol, doping LDH. The resulting porous composite features abundant -COOH -OH chelating groups, significantly enhancing its adsorption capacity structural stability. material’s structure surface modifications were systematically characterized SEM, TGA, FT-IR, XPS. Batch experiments conducted assess the influence of adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, pH, contact time, temperature on performance. Adsorption kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics analyses revealed primary mechanism monolayer chemical adsorption, experimental data closely fitting Freundlich isotherm pseudo-second-order kinetic models. modified exhibits increased roughness sites, in markedly improved removal efficiency. This study not only provides theoretical insights into but also highlights potential LDH-functionalized gels heavy metal wastewater treatment, offering sustainable pathway addressing global water contamination challenges.
