Abstract In the last 20 years, direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs) have been subject of tremendous research efforts for potential application as on-demand power sources. Two leading technologies respectively based on proton exchange membranes (PEMs) and anion (AEMs) emerged: first one operating in an acidic environment conducting protons; second alkaline electrolytes hydroxyl ions. this review, we present analysis state-of-the-art DAFCs fed with methanol ethanol purpose to support a comparative systems, which is missing current literature. A special focus placed effect reaction stoichiometry systems. Particularly, point out that, OH − participates stoichiometrically reactions, that oxidation products are anions. Polyoxometalate (POM) based binary and ternary hybrids, including the combination of POMs, semiconductors, nanostructured carbon (carbon nanotube (CNT), graphene, dots et al.) metal nanoparticles (MNPs), are key materials in photoelectrocatalysis. POM play a role constructing nanohybrids contributing to their photoelectrochemical catalytic properties. These composites combine properties from two or three functional nanoscale materials, resulting wider range applications, catalysis, energy conversion storage, molecular sensors electronics. Herein, we summarize latest progress (POM/Metal, POM/semiconductor POM/nanocarbon) (Metal/POM/nanocarbon) with focus on for photocatalysis, fuel cells, biosensors devices. Current applications critically assessed promising future target systems discussed.

For large-scale fuel cell applications, it is significant to replace expensive Pt-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts with nonprecious metal- or metal-free carbon-based catalysts high activity. However, still challenging deeply understand the role of intrinsic defects and origin ORR activity in pure nanocarbon. Therefore, a novel self-assembly pyrolysis strategy fabricate defect-rich mesoporous carbon nanoribbons are presented. Due effective regulation nanoarchitecture, vast number defective catalytic sites (edge holes) exposed, which thereby enhances electron transfer kinetics Such undoped display large half-wave potential 0.837 V, excellent long-term stability, exceptional methanol tolerance, surpassing most commercial Pt/C (20 wt.%) catalyst. Structural characterizations density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that zigzag edge armchair pentagon at hole defect responsible for outstanding performance.
