Pharmaceuticals are a unique class of emerging contaminants owing to their intrinsic ability induce physiological effects on man and animals at low concentrations. released into the environment via diverse routes; human animal wastes major sources. The persistence mode action pharmaceuticals in make them concern. Among methods available for wastewater treatment, adsorption technique is found be effective easy operate. expensive nature commercial activated carbons, however, created limitation technique; hence exploration low-cost sustainable adsorbents removal different categories water contaminants. Agricultural offer such advantages as low-cost, abundance eco-friendly materials adsorbent preparation. Herein presented category classes cum risks associated with environment. chemistry carbon/agro viz-a-viz suitability potency pharmaceutical waste were reviewed; benefits agricultural usage have also been presented. Chlorine-based disinfection for drinking water treatment (DWT) was one of the 20th century's great public health achievements, as it substantially reduced risk acute microbial waterborne disease. However, today's chlorinated is not unambiguously safe; trace levels regulated and unregulated byproducts (DBPs), other known, unknown, emerging contaminants (KUECs), present chronic risks that make them essential removal targets. Because conventional chemical-based DWT processes do little to remove DBPs or KUECs, alternative approaches are needed minimize by removing DBP precursors KUECs ubiquitous in supplies. We "Minus Approach" a toolbox practices technologies mitigate without compromising microbiological safety. The Minus Approach reduces problem-causing chemical addition (i.e., "Plus Approach") producing biologically stable containing pathogens at having negligible human lower concentrations DBPs. Aside from ozonation, avoids primary coagulants, disinfectants, advanced oxidation processes. focuses on bank filtration, biofiltration, adsorption, membranes physically precursors, pathogens; consequently, purveyors can use ultraviolet light key locations conjunction with smaller dosages secondary disinfectants regrowth distribution systems. describe how contrasts Plus Approach, integrates artificial intelligence, ultimately improve sustainability performance treatment. Finally, we consider barriers adoption Approach.

Wastewater reuse for agricultural irrigation is a widespread beneficial practice, in line with the sustainable development goals. However, contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) present wastewater, such as pharmaceuticals, pose an environmental risk. The Tula Valley Mexico one world's largest areas reusing wastewater agriculture. no untargeted CEC monitoring has been undertaken there, limiting information available to prioritise local risk assessment. Furthermore, presence Global South remains understudied, compared North. There that current research efforts focus on CECs predominantly found North, leading strategies may not be appropriate where pollution profile different. To address these knowledge gaps, sampling campaign at five key sites was and samples analysed using multi-residue targeted liquid chromatography mass spectrometry methods. Using data, ten were least site: 4‑tert-octylphenol, acetaminophen, bezafibrate, diclofenac, erythromycin, levonorgestrel, simvastatin, sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim tramadol well total estrogenicity (combination three steroid hormones). Six have previously quantified Valley. Over hundred pollutants never measured area identified through analysis supported by library spectrum match. Examples include diclofenac carbamazepine metabolites area-specific herbicide fomesafen. This contributes characterising South, providing site-specific data
