Circular economy has become a popular subject, attracting attention from academics, practitioners, and policy-makers alike. However, despite the excitement surrounding it, concept of circular been criticized for being vague having multiple interpretations different fields. As result, there is lack evidence guidance making it difficult to put into practice. Our goal fill this gap by bridging design implementation solutions in water sector. Through an exploratory study two case studies, we have shown significance what call as "circular value" context coal mining. This value strongly influenced chemistry, concentration levels purity these effluents. We compared cases (ranging 2.5 6 euros per cubic meter) cost novel treatment system, developed authors through EU-funded project ZERO BRINE, capture value. allowed us evaluate potential implementation. suggest that transition can offer significant opportunities mining regions enabling just topic increasingly gaining interest among academic practitioner communities, further triggered recently adopted Just Transition Mechanism. mechanism secures targeted support 55 billion euro period 2021–2027 most affected within Europe. The introduced article serve tool exploring creation emerging chains mines, well other wastewater resource recovery projects general.

Wastewater treatment plant decision makers face stricter regulations regarding human health protection, environmental preservation, and emissions reduction, meaning they must improve process sustainability circularity, whilst maintaining economic performance. This creates complex multi-objective problems when operating selecting technologies to meet these demands, resulting in the development of many support systems for water sector. European Commission publications highlight their ambition greater levels sustainability, which system implementation should align with be successful this region. Following review 57 wastewater systems, main function multi-criteria decision-making tools are technology selection optimisation operation. A large contrast aims is found, as clearly define goals indicators used, procedures often use vague language making it difficult connect selected resultant outcomes. Several recommendations made usage, such more rigorous indicator protocols including participatory approaches expansion sets, well structured investigation results sensitivity or uncertainty analysis, error quantification.

This work explores resource recovery coupled to seawater desalination in small islands. As islands depend on for water access, they make an excellent ground exploring the trade-offs associated recovery, like potential economic gains, energy use, and environmental impacts. Here, we investigated these tensions context of Lampedusa, Italy. We then developed evaluated scenarios additional water, Mg, other resources from brines, identify if how is interesting approach island vis-à-vis tensions. have found that increase production with brine alternative islands, especially when harnessing waste heat. However, while some technologies offer possibilities recovering resources, places benefits do not seem justify costs local system.

As an informal environmental regulation, public participation plays a vital role in the multi-governance system. Based on evolutionary game theory, this paper constructs models of government enterprise, enterprise and analyzes impact different intensity behavior strategies. The results show that: (1) In two-party game, each stakeholder is related to its costs benefits. Still, effective allows choose legal discharge, even if benefits discharge are smaller than illegal discharge. (2) three-party steady-state conditions same as those models. However, decision-making enterprises also needed consider whistle-blowing their reputation image. (3) With increase government’s ecological protection publicity, subsidies, fines, concern, whistle-blowing, evolution speed towards faster.

Lithium has been included in the critical raw materials list of EU 2020, attending to its increasing demand strategic sectors and depletion traditional sources. Seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination, a feedstock supply high-water demand, is expected generate approximately 43,945·106 m3 year-1 concentrates worldwide, offering potential lithium content up 87,890 tons year-1. Nevertheless, average concentration Li+ SWRO brines, approx. 2.0 mg L-1, significantly lower than those values reported literature for other non-conventional sources like salt lake brines (200-6000 L-1), thus turning recovery more challenging objective from scientific technical aspects. Our group successfully developed synergic combinations extractants, based organophosphate β-diketone mixtures, able achieve very high separation selectivity percentages model concentrates. This work aims further optimize this selective extraction while achieving competitive operational conditions towards maturity proposed process. To that end Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with three-level central composite design (CCD) applied. Three process variables, extractant concentration, basicity aqueous phase, molar ratio between were evaluated. Regarding maximum predicted value 99.7% (R2=93.4%), 100% (R2=90.79%) DBM•TOPO FDOD•TOPO system respectively obtained. These results experimentally verified within 95% confidence interval. Compared literature, study demonstrates feasibility obtaining optimal laboratory-scale dilute solutions under moderately basic (pH=10.3), minimizing rate mixture (0.26).
