Anaerobic digestion is an important technology for energy recovery from organic waste. However, methanogenesis restricted by some barriers, such as the low-speed bottleneck of interspecies electron transfer (IET), low hydrogen partial pressure limitation, trace element deficiency, etc., resulting in poor system stability and methane production. Recently, multiple iron accelerants have been employed to overcome above challenges proven effective enhancing methanogenesis. This study reviews effects (Fe0, Fe3O4 magnetite, Fe2O3 hematite, salts other accelerants) on anaerobic terms production, process microbial community elaborates mechanisms mediating direct (DIET) syntrophic methanogenic community, strong reducibility promoting methanogenesis, provision nutrient elements microorganisms, etc. The potential engineering application current research advances regarding environmental impacts are also summarized. Although exhibit positive digestion, most focuses laboratory small-scale investigations, its large-scale should be further verified. Future focus elucidating developing diverse methods different types systems, optimizing applications, exploring high-efficiency strategies accelerants.
