Given the current highest demand in history for raw materials, there is a growing recovery of key metals from secondary sources, order to prevent metal depletion and reduce risk toxic discharges into environment. This paper focuses on nature-based solutions (i.e., biomining bioleaching) applied resource (metals) solid matrices. Biomining exploits potential microorganisms facilitate extraction wide range waste materials as an interesting alternative, replacing primary with material resources (thus improving recycling rates context circular economy). Special attention was paid analysis process sustainability perspective. In this regard, several supporting tools (e.g., life cycle assessment, LCA), developed assist decision-makers complex assessing scaling-up remediation projects (including biomining), were discussed. The application LCA still evolving, requires comprehensive case studies improve methodological approach. review outlines fact that few have focused demonstrating environmental performance process. Also, further should be performed promote commercial opportunities biomining, which can used recover recycle matrices site remediation. Despite some important disadvantages (poor kinetics; toxicity), considered cleaner approach than conventional mining processes. However, implementing it large scale improvements regulatory issues public acceptance.

The hazardous nature of heavy metals (HMs) in the ecosystem has drawn global attention due to its emergence as a major environmental and public health concern. As toxic are non-degradable, they affect not only animals but also human beings vegetation. These HMs long-lasting pollutants that travel vast distances from their site origin environment bioaccumulate humans other organisms through food chain. can cause extensive pollution since frequently produced by industrial activities inappropriate disposal procedures. Biosurfactants' (BSs) versatility makes them an appealing category plays essential role various biotechnological applications for remediation. BSs have variety characteristics, including metal binding, solubilization, emulsification. They remediate processes like complexation, ion exchange, solubilization. Furthermore, owing amphiphilic nature, improve sorption solubility hydrophobic contaminants reduce surface area interfacial tension immiscible liquids. result, BS-based remediation important part removal process multiple ways. This review aims provide information on function eliminating bioremediation sustainability.
