ABSTRACT The degradation of wall paintings in the Mogao Grottoes, China, is primarily caused by migration water and salt surrounding rock (SR), with being key influencing factor. However, it remains unclear whether movement earth‐air, driven air pressure difference (APD) between inside SR external atmospheric (AP), affects transport rock. This study focuses on Cave B113 to investigate effect earth‐air cave's SR. Under closed conditions, APD was monitored at depths 10, 20, 30 cm within results indicate that when AP changes, fluctuates opposite direction increases depth Pearson correlation coefficients 20 are −0.31 −0.32, respectively. reflects influence serves as a driving force directly governs earth‐air. concentration vapour layers affected temperature, while relative absolute humidities these influenced ascending descending magnitude fluctuation determines volume migrates Collectively, factors determine amount evaporation occurs characteristics moisture present cave. elucidates pivotal contributing deterioration cave, providing scientific basis for developing new ways protecting paintings. It has extensive reference value vadose zone.

The study specifies the changes in radon activity concentration (RAC) soil gas with depth and emphasizes significance of meteorological factor for deeper boreholes. Radon was measured 0.6 m, 1 m 1.5 boreholes, gradient also calculated. Spatial patterns were estimated using an autocorrelation index. RAC ranged from 9454 ± 439 Bq/m3 16,031 602 22,049 937 m. increased at most sites behaved quite uniformly spatial terms. At same time, no significant differences uranium (238U) series isotopes different depths detected. Significant variability radioactivity physical properties soils is noted. highest between It found that increasing connection conditions (temperature humidity) surface layer atmosphere lost. follows shallow boreholes it necessary to consider influence conditions. correlates but correlation themselves. Thus, are optimal monitoring. A high level indicates a potential indoor exposure this territory, corresponding epidemiological consequences long term.

Abstract The numerical modeling of radon concentrations in the fault zone underground excavations at Książ Castle was conducted using a stochastic Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) model. Due to difficulties related with obtaining exact fractures rock mass, novel approach used this study incorporates model known site data. analysis utilized dataset comprising long-term measurements 222 Rn activity concentration and geodetic for twelve faults unit. parameters considered DFN are: fracture length, Peclet number ( Pe = 0.1 1.0, respectively), advection velocities (from 10 –8 m/s –6 from range –7 –4 m/s, diffusion D 2.1 × 1/s), decay constant λ gas generation q ) along within 1.5 –3 Bq/m 3 ·s 3.5 ·s. calibration process obtained best fit when rate uniformly distributed through mass addition incorporating higher value 3.0 ·s) where elevated have been measured. results also confirmed that should always be were measured regardless measurement period. For indicated “area” 25% 37.5% between May–October 18.5% 40% November–April. influence zones on recorded noticeable up depth 15 m. Within range, highest values concentration, ranging 1,600 2,000 , consistently observed season. However, as increased, decreased 800 400 became more dispersed.
