Introduction In recent years, China has vigorously promoted sustainable social development, aiming to enhance residents’ environmental protection awareness and encourage their active participation in through various means. To achieve this goal, cultivating feelings (EF) among residents become a key initiative. Childhood nature experiences (CNE) may have profound impact on pro-environmental behaviors (PEB) adulthood. However, the specific mechanisms underlying influence remain unclear. Methods This study, viewed lens of biophilia hypothesis, uses EF contacts (EC) as mediating variables, risk perception (ERP) moderating variable. Statistical analyses, including multiple linear regression, mediation, moderation were conducted data from 1,499 survey responses explore which CNE PEB Results (1) The study shows that do not direct effect adulthood, but instead exert an indirect EC, with being stronger than EC. (2) ERP significantly moderates relationship between EC two types PEB, well link private sphere (PRIEB). it does moderate public (PUBEB). (3) most effects. Conclusion findings suggest relying solely childhood directly shape adult PEB. Compared play larger role strengthens effects both EF. emphasizes unstructured contact planned, educational outdoor activities during are equally important.
