The Yangtze River Basin (YRB) is an important source of marine microplastics (MPs). However, unscientific research methods in previous studies have led to inaccurate estimates the occurrence and ecologic risk MPs. This study aimed comprehensively assess distribution ecological risks MPs YRB, through investigating full-size surface waters YRB over 3 years. Size Effect was developed based on impact size MP-carried pollutants human health, combined with multiple evaluate potential average MP abundance 8797 ± 12,281 items/m3, dominated by polypropylene fragments. small (<0.3 mm; 92.52%) were driving factor spatial heterogeneity. Interestingly, Three Gorges Dam significantly altered weakened transportation. Agricultural activities, wastewater treatment plants, atmospheric deposition main sources YRB. Multiple assessment indicated that at middle–low level. addresses <0.05 mm provides insights for assessment, serves as a reference sustainable management.

Airborne microplastics pose a significant risk to human health. Similarly the water-air transfer process, such as sea spray, aerosols generated during wastewater treatment driven by aeration and mechanical agitation, are an overlooked potential source of airborne microplastics. This study constitutes first attempt investigate pollution characteristics in treatment, based on laser direct infrared spectroscopy (LDIR) pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Microplastics were ubiquitously observed from each unit plant, with abundances range 0.83-28.03 items·m-3. A total 30 different polymer types identified LDIR, while polyvinyl chloride polyethylene terephthalate most common polymers. Film fragment main shapes, predominant size 20-50 μm. The aerosolization degree is affected intensities hydrodynamic conditions maintained unit, but also varied depending their inherent characteristics. These findings suggest that contributes novel insight into occurrence treatment.
