Understanding the interaction between brine and impure salt rock is essential for long-term stability of caverns used in energy storage. This knowledge crucial optimizing design ensuring structural integrity storage systems bedded formations. We conducted immersion batch reaction experiments to investigate effect on rock. evaluated with salinities 0 ppm, 50,000 150,000 250,000 ppm over a 30 day period observed significant weakening cracking samples. Based acquired SEM images identical spots before after reactions brine, we that presence creates oversized pores up 50 μm. The results suggest damage attributed (1) combined dissolution detachment embedded halite crystals (2) calcite dolomite grains.
