Ciprofloxacin (CIP) has been listed in the last version of surface water due to its ability kill human cells by inhibiting activity DNA topoisomerase IV. Thus, CIP, along with other antibiotic pollution become a serious threat environment and public health. Ozonation used as an advanced technique that is applied wastewater treatment remove but primary limitation this method low solubility ozone water. This study first report CIP removal scale-up aqueous solution using self-developed aerator pump-enhanced ozonation (APO) system, which only employs propeller zigzag arrangement meshes. pump decreased size bubbles 90% increased effective 0.47 ppm. The mechanism degradation attributed oxidation reaction reactive oxygen species, such hydroxyl, oxygen, hydroperoxyl radicals, generated on microbubbles. It was found rate efficiency APO system were 3.64 × 10-3/min 83.5%, respectively, higher compared those conventional flow (FO) systems (1.47 60.9%). also revealed electrical energy (0.146 g/kWh), FO (0.106 g/kWh). monitored resulting antibacterial against Escherichia coli Staphylococcus aureus.

Pharmaceutical residues have been identified as a priority contaminant due to their toxicity organisms and the ecosystem representative refractory organic compounds in water. Therefore, using efficient treatment methods remove them from wastewater has become crucial topic of research. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on sulfate radical gained increased attention recent years superior performance adaptability decomposition contaminants. In this work, scrap printed circuit boards (PCBs) were used prepare low-cost heterogeneous peroxydisulfate (PDS) catalytic activator

Chemical pollution is still an underestimated threat to surface waters from natural areas. This study has analysed the presence and distribution of 59 organic micropollutants (OMPs) including pharmaceuticals, lifestyle compounds, pesticides, organophosphate esters (OPEs), benzophenone perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in 411 water samples 140 Important Bird Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) Spain, evaluate impact these pollutants sites environmental relevance. Lifestyle pharmaceuticals OPEs were most ubiquitous chemical families, while pesticides PFASs showed a detection frequency below 25% samples. The mean concentrations detected ranged 0.1 301 ng/L. According spatial data, agricultural been identified as important source all OMPs compounds have related artificial wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) discharges, which also waters. Fifteen out found at levels posing high risk for aquatic IBAs ecosystems, being insecticide chlorpyrifos, antidepressant venlafaxine perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) concerning compounds. first quantify evidence that are emerging freshwater ecosystems essential biodiversity conservation.

The growing population, intensified anthropogenic pressures and climate variability have increased the demands on available water resources, reuse has become a high priority, particularly in areas of world suffering from stress. main objectives this review paper are to consider identify potential opportunities challenges implementation schemes worldwide by considering analyzing different fields interest reuse, current future global drivers policies, existing advances treatment technologies promising elimination environmental footprint human health risk, an analysis trends potable non-potable development quality criteria issues related transition circular economy. Moreover, major knowledge gaps critical domains discussed. For study, thorough literature was conducted, using research articles, technical reports, specific national (and EU) proposals, guidance documents, legislative initiatives actions, as well any validly disseminated findings scientists around wider scientific area (alternative) supply, management, sustainable development, protection public health. Water practices expected increase future, mainly developed countries climate-vulnerable planet. Current wastewater can provide opportunity for foul exploitation alternative increasing systems worldwide, relying pollutant/contaminant elimination, improving economic energy performances. paradigmatic technological switches based improved understanding relationships between cycle Water–Energy–Food (WEF) Nexus will perspective schemes. benefits recovery nutrients through sewage also highlighted, arising reduced costs associated with their sheer removal supplement fertilizers WEF Nexus. On other hand, nutrient may promote agricultural or landscape practices, contributing less consumption reducing GHGs emissions. Regarding management use schemes, holistic approach (integrated management) is proposed, incorporating regulatory actions awareness, interconnection among actors/stakeholders, efficient control monitoring. establishment paramount preventing undesirable impacts humans environment. study considers “one water” concept, which means equal independent origin water, instead differentiates types facilitate reuse. Finally, it highlights need understand ecosystem services (ESs) consequences achieving goals (SDGs).
