During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, preventive use of antimicrobials such as quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) surged worldwide. As cationic and surface-active biocides, QACs are only partly removed during wastewater treatment may cause adverse ecological effects in downstream environment. To understand environmental consequences increased disinfectant we investigated spatiotemporal QAC concentration trends suspended particulate matter (SPM) three diverse German rivers. Covering pooled annual SPM samples from 2006-2021 monthly 2018-2021 collected by Environmental Specimen Bank, 31 were quantified high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. ∑QAC concentrations differed more than tenfold between rivers order Saar (average 6.7 µg/g) > Rhine (0.9 Mulde (0.3 µg/g). The strongest potential pandemic imprint was however observed (+67 %) (+22 %). Besides dynamics, also seasonal variation mineral content tentatively affected concentrations. Exceedance predicted no-effect for sediment suggest ecotoxicological risks long-chained already before pandemic. Our study thus highlights importance monitoring antimicrobial pandemics calls an urgent minimization non-essential applications.

The outbreak of epidemics such as African swine fever has intensified the use disinfectants in pig farms, resulting an increasing residual concentration environmental media; however, high-frequency excessive that damage farm manure anaerobic fermentation systems and their mechanisms not attracted enough attention. Especially, complex effects on for remain poorly understood, thus impeding application practical systems. Herein, we explored glutaraldehyde disinfectant methane production, effluent physicochemical indices, microbial communities a fully automated methanogenic potential test system (AMPTSII). results show adding led to remarkable alterations chemical oxygen demand (COD), volatile solids (VS), polysaccharide phosphorus concentrations. During process, production displayed notable decrease 5.0–98% all treatments, trend was especially apparent treatments containing high levels glutaraldehyde. Comparisons quality showed presence 0.002–0.04% glutaraldehyde, COD total (TP) increased by 12–310% 15–27%, respectively. Moreover, addition 0.01–0.08% decreased ammonium (NH4+-N) VS degradation rate 7.7–15% 4.9–26.2%. Furthermore, microbiological analysis had adverse community. Notably, certain functional bacteria were restrained, highlighted decreases relative abundance diversity 1.3–17% 0.06–21%, This study provides theoretical basis rational

Abstract Anaerobic digestion with simultaneous production of biogas is one the most common methods recycling, processing and decontamination organic waste to produce alternative fuels. A commonly used indicator sanitary safety substrate eggs Ascaris suum nematodes pigs, which are characterised by extremely high resistance environmental factors. The aim investigate effect mesophilic mode anaerobic on activity pathogens, particularly eggs. studied nematode species were placed in a installation at temperature 37 °C. digestate samples then taken every 4 days for 28 days, followed larvae culture determine viability results our research have shown that regime an effective method controlling parasites, but same time, it needs be improved, since only 7.6% A. remained alive after 1-day stay, about 50% week stay 9% third reactor. Thus, further optimisation fermentation can aimed improving suppression pathogenic activity.

Reducing methane (CH4) emission from livestock production can be achieved by the treatment of manure in slurry pits and storage tanks. In case pits, treating residual left out after frequent flushing largely reduce CH4 due to decrease methanogenic inoculum. this study, three surfactants, two oxidants a flocculant were screened for their efficiency reducing pig headspace setup. All surfactants reduced > 95% at dosage 8 g kg−1 particularly sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was effective low only 2.5 with >95% reduction. Oxidants 30–85% different dosages, hypochlorite being most effective. Flocculant did not emissions significantly. None studied treatments ammonia Similarities pathway observed among surfactant treated slurries, oxidant slurries. Considering cost environmental effects additives, SDS seems promising choice. Future work on could either as combination other additives or up-scaling designing solutions houses.
