Homoaggregation of polystyrene microplastics (MPs) and heteroaggregation MPs with anionic clay minerals, namely, layered double hydroxide (LDH), in different salt (NaCl, CaCl2, Na2SO4) solutions were systematically investigated using light scattering techniques. The type ionic strength had significant effects on the stability both LDH particles individually results could be explained by DLVO theory Schulze–Hardy rule. However, once stable colloidal dispersions individual mixed, occurred between oppositely charged LDH, which was also confirmed transmission electron microscopy X-ray scattering. Adsorption resulted neutralization reversal surface charge at appropriate doses. Once adsorption neutralized negative charges MP spheres, rapid aggregation observed dispersions, whereas samples formed high low concentrations. governing interparticle interactions included repulsive electrical double-layer forces, as well van der Waals patch-charge attractions, depended mass ratio interacting composition aqueous solvent. Our shed behavior a complex aquatic environment and, long term, are useful for developing LDH-based approaches water remediation to remove contamination particles.

The ubiquitous occurrence of microplastics and nanoplastics in aquatic environments is major concern as these priority pollutants are readily ingested by a wide variety organisms. Although quantitative data on the interaction even more so freshwater their with food web still limited, studies have nevertheless demonstrated that micro- or nanosized plastic particles can be various members zooplankton functioning primary consumers. Bacterivorous ciliates crucial microzooplankton. These fascinating microorganisms critical components microbial loops essential links between different trophic levels within web. Ingestion microscopic affects ciliate cell cellular molecular level. Physical chemical characteristics such size, density, surface properties influence stability, distribution, retention, transportation, bioavailability microplastic for ingestion ciliates. In turn, environmental fate affect ecotoxicity via modifications, forming so-called eco-corona. consequences potential bioaccumulation through possible interference emerging controlling bacterial possibly viral abundance environments. Due to limited available, elucidating bacterivorous ciliate-micro-/nanoplastics research topic if we want holistically assess pollutants.
