Residential wastewater, with no industrial inputs, is an underrecognized source of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This study provides the first direct comparison PFAS in septage pump stations, targeting 70 compounds employing total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay. Septage exhibited markedly higher precursors concentrations than median post-TOP levels 687.5 ng/L vs 84.2 ng/L, respectively. FTCAs were fully oxidized, while diPAPs showed incomplete oxidation due to high organic loads. Septic systems function as reservoirs, increasing risks groundwater contamination, particularly areas shallow aquifers. Pump stations contributed episodic spikes, likely affecting downstream wastewater treatment. The detection 27 compounds, including short-chain alternatives, highlights shifting contamination patterns. Findings emphasize need for tailored analytical frameworks pretreatment technologies mitigate across decentralized centralized systems. Integrating analysis critical accurate risk assessment, targeted measurements underestimate contamination. These results provide new insights into behavior residential guiding future mitigation efforts.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a family of "forever chemicals" including perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). These toxic chemicals do not break down in the environment or our bodies. In human body, PFOS perfluoroctanoic acid (PFOA) have half-life (

Fluorotelomer-based acrylate polymers and surfactants used to grease-proof food contact paper (FCP) are potential sources of dietary exposure perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Food (FCS) containing polyfluorinated long-chains (≥C8) were voluntarily removed by their manufacturers from the U.S. market in 2011 due health concerns largely replaced with FCSs short-chain (≤C7) PFAS.
